Students were challenged to design and build a three-dimensional animal using boxes shaped like rectangular prisms and cubes. After choosing an animal, students sketched their designs, collected boxes, and transformed everyday materials into creative animal sculptures.

But this project was about much more than arts and crafts! Students applied their knowledge of volume by measuring the length, width and height of each rectangular prism, calculating individual volumes, and finding the total volume of their animal creations in cubic units.

Volume Zoo proved that learning math can be creative, hands-on and WILDLY fun!

They highlighted all the great things happening at Washington and helped distribute approximately 250 goodie bags! The event was also a wonderful opportunity to connect with current Washington families and welcome new families into the school community.

A special thank you to Coach Gus for donating his time and bringing his mobile basketball trailer to the event, adding even more fun for the children!

We are proud of these students and staff for representing Washington Middle School and making a positive difference in our community!

KUSD Early Childhood hosts Trunk or Treat event for local families /blog/news/kusd-early-childhood-hosts-trunk-or-treat-event-for-local-families/ Wed, 04 Nov 2026 17:19:32 +0000 /?post_type=news&p=33621 Our Early Childhood Department recently brought families together for a Fall Trunk or Treat event filled with fun, hands-on activities and learning opportunities!

Early Learners, Speech Impact and Play Group families enjoyed visiting each trunk, where teachers, educational support professionals (ESPs), related service providers and diagnosticians created engaging activities for children and their siblings.

Through playful activities, children learned about good toothbrushing habits, and families received donated toothbrush kits to take home and continue practicing healthy habits.

We love seeing our KUSD staff find creative ways to bring families together, make learning fun and build meaningful connections with our youngest learners.

Beyond the Tassel: Lexie DuChene, class of 2017 /blog/news/beyond-the-tassel-lexie-duchene-class-of-2017/ Wed, 04 Nov 2026 01:00:16 +0000 /?post_type=news&p=33610 Meet Lexie DuChene, a 2017 Tremper High School graduate who is now a U.S. Air Force F-15E Pilot.

Current city: Boise, ID

Favorite teacher: Ms. Brown (government) put in a ton of effort to make sure every student was seen, heard, and learned something every day. Seems small, but I know she made a big impact on me and others around me.

Advice to current KUSD students: Following your dreams isn’t just saying it; it takes hard work and dedication if you truly want something. Never be afraid to fail, but always learn something. Anytime you do something, try to be better the next time. This is how you achieve your dreams or find new ones!

‘Room on the Broom’ teaches Brass kindergarteners literacy and belonging /blog/news/room-on-the-broom-teaches-brass-kindergarteners-literacy-and-belonging/ Thu, 29 Oct 2026 19:37:36 +0000 /?post_type=news&p=33584 Brass Community School students in Ms. Gordon’s kindergarten class brought the beloved story “Room on the Broom” to life through a meaningful project connecting literacy, phonics, friendship and belonging.

Through the story, students explored the importance of building healthy friendships, showing kindness and including others both inside and outside our classroom. They extended their learning into the phonics curriculum by using magical spells to build their names (iggety, ziggity, zaggety, zoom-out rose a truly magnificent kid) while identifying and recognizing letters in their names and those of their classmates.

Each day, they celebrated a few students’ names, making learning engaging, personal and exciting. Students eagerly asked, “Is there room on the broom for a kid like me?” The class responded, “Yes!” and then placed themselves on the classroom broom.

This project not only strengthened foundational literacy skills but also reinforced the powerful message that every child is valued, included, and belongs. Because in their classroom, there is ALWAYS room on the broom for everyone! 🧹
